Supa Modo a Kenyan film by Likarion Wainaina, follows a young girl battling a terminal illness, who finds comfort and strength through a super hero alter ego she creates inspired by the action films that she has watched. Though her family is wary of her condition, her strength inspires her community to help her become the super hero (Supa Modo) she has always dreamt being.

Watching this film for the first time made me very emotional. Not only because it was a Kenyan film, but because this film showed us how young people can feel empowered and find strength from their favourite movie characters and how important your community can be in supporting you through your toughest time. From the characters to the music, this movie draws you in and makes you feel as though you are in the movie, giving you a taste of what small town life is like in Kenya.

A heart-warming, tearjerker are the words I would use to describe this film.

I am very excited that AIM is screening it and I highly recommend everyone to see Supa Modo. This film will make you wish that you were a Supa Modo yourself.
